Penelope, The

HfMT, season 2022

The Trojan War and the Odyssey, to which he gave his name, last 20 years: Odysseus. As a hero, he roams the world, fights gloriously, has affairs with nymphs and sorceresses, but his wife Penelope is only supposed to sit faithfully and sadly at the window and wait for him. The epitome of the virtuous wife? An idol of the male world? Hardly. Penelope is the subject, she has her own story.

In a journey through musical eras - from the forefather of the opera genre, Claudio Monteverdi, to the Romantic Gabriel Fauré, the Impressionist Claude Debussy and our contemporaries Steven Tornado and Laura Livers - this woman finds her own voice. What temptations does she pursue, alone in a palace surrounded by 108 suitors? What inner journeys does she embark on? Where does her imagination take her? Which decisions does she end up making her own?
